Advancing Christ’s Kingdom, Locally and Globally

FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

OUR JOURNEY FORWARD TOGETHER

On May 3, 2024, the General Conference of the United Methodist Church voted to make changes to the Book of Discipline, dropping the ban on same-sex marriage and the ordination of clergy in same-sex marriages.

On May 13, 2024, our church council met during which a motion was made to begin the disaffiliation process. A vote was taken in which of the 88 members in attendance, there were only 3 votes opposing a disassociation.

We published on our Facebook Page and the Website, the following message:

In light of the recent changes made to the Book of Discipline, we would like to be public, that it is the intent of our congregation/church/preschool to disassociate from the United Methodist Church. During this time of discernment and change please come visit, worship, and hear the message of Christ and how much He loves you. Thankful to be a part of a church that loves everyone, welcomes everyone, takes the church outside of its four walls to take the Great Commission as a command, is more focused on serving others than serving ourselves, and most importantly still stands on the infallible and inerrant word of God– holding it as our final authority for almost 200 years. “The grass withers and the flowers fade, but the word of God stands forever.” Isa.40:8

On May 14, 2024, our church submitted our letter to our District Superintendent submitting our intention to disassociate from the United Methodist Church.

In August, we received the publication of instructions on disassociation (now referred to as the Limited Church Closure Process) and began the work to provide all the Registry Packet contents.

On September 17, the packet was completed and ready for submission. Pastor Layne hand-delivered the registry packet to our District Superintendent as instructed.

On October 29th, the Judicial Council of the United Methodist Church made it unambiguously clear that this disaffiliation process is unconstitutional and that any efforts to permit a local church to undertake an alternate means of disaffiliation is null and void

On November 6 2024 our Executive Church Council members met to explore pathways to continue our separation from the United Methodist Church. There are many unanswered questions, yet we are determined to honor the wishes of our congregation. We want to keep you informed. We will continue to communicate regularly as we determine our findings and try to navigate during this process. We do not have answers today, but we are diligently working towards a solution.

Please keep our church in your prayers regularly and pray for our Executive Council during this time of discernment.
