Clothe Yourselves

I really never considered myself a fashion consultant until I sat down to write this post. I’ll begin by asking, “Have you thought much about your summer wardrobe? What’s in vogue this year – blouses with a flounce to the sleeve, narrow or wide ties, pants with a hemline above or below the ankle, knits or cotton blends? Surely not polyester – that went out years ago!”

Or is it actually the fabric coverings in current styles that matter most in projecting who we are? I really don’t think so. I recently read a quote by Winston Churchill in which he encouraged his War Cabinet by telling them to “clothe” themselves with determination and perseverance. There was no mention of appropriate textiles or clothing design. Churchill wasn’t talking about outward appearance, but qualities of the inward man.

The apostle Paul made clear the ever-stylish adornment for Christians:

“Clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:12 a-14.

Paul’s suggested wardrobe never changes with the seasons; it never goes out of style. Acts of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness and love are always fashionable. They may take different forms, but they look attractive on everyone, men and women alike. In fact, everybody should have at least one of each. Don’t take these wardrobe suggestions and hang them in your closet or fold them and put them in a drawer. Put them in your heart, wear them on your sleeve, carry them in your hands, cover your entire being with these virtues.
